Graphene reinforced polyether ether ketone nanocomposites for bone repair applications

To improve the performance of polyether ether ketone matrix (PEEK) in hard tissue repair and replacement applications, we fabricated graphene nanoplatelet (G) reinforced PEEK with different filler weight concentrations (0.1%–5%) through injection moulding. The mechanical properties, surface morphology, chemical composition thermal stability composites have been characterized. biocompatibility has assessed vitro bone function composite implants vivo using a rabbit mandibular defect model. Mechanical testing results suggest that samples compressive moduli similar to natural bone. Although addition G into does not significantly influence tensile, flexural or moduli, it can enhance ductility toughness material. On other hand, all G-reinforced demonstrated enhanced adhesion di?erentiation rat marrow stromal cells (BMSCs), 5% G-PEEK showing highest bioactivity among samples. osseointegration data further revealed best effect promoting regeneration, both early stage late re-growth. Study shows our PEEK-based provides promising strategy for enhancing future regenerative implants.
